An assault on language is an assault on truth. A lexicon which no longer affords accurate description is hostage to those who set the boundaries of acceptable discourse. This is not a tenable position for democracy.

In a move branded ‘genius’ by City Hall insiders, loveable Londoner, mayor Sadiq Khan, has promised to slash knife crime by issuing his own range of ‘peaceful’ switchblades. ‘Knife crime is caused by discrimination’ Khan confidently told The Guardian this week. ‘It’s unfair that not everyone can afford the latest zombie knife – that is, after all, essentially what knives are – a fashion statement. If everyone’s carrying the same shank, they won’t feel the need to use it’.

The problem for the UK is that, while the NHS is utterly unfit for purpose, politically it is considered such a ‘scared cow’ that it is electoral suicide for any party leader to float the idea of reform. Even the outspoken Nigel Farage, who has regularly called for a debate on the matter, has been forced to deny he ever intended to privatise the system.

Despite the accolade of being Britain’s ‘first black woman to become an MP’, it is to Abbott’s detriment that she is still routinely introduced as such; four decades into a political career, this might lead one to the conclusion that beyond identity politics, she has achieved precious little of note.

The lethal combination of a weak monarchy and a weak clergy leave Britain vulnerable to something more assertive filling the void. That something is undoubtedly Islam. Whether it’s Sharia via the backdoor, shows of strength like mayor Khan’s Ramadan lights in central London, or the election of Humza Yousaf as Scotland’s first minister—a man who wants to impose a de facto blasphemy law (Hate Crime bill)—inclusivity is only ever a one-way street.
